Neurofibromatosis, Leg Deformity Correction - Patient Case Studies

As a child, Lee Ann was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis, a set of genetic disorders, which caused a deformity of her leg, called a nonunion. This condition required multiple surgeries during childhood leaving her leg deformed. As an adult, Lee Ann learned Dr. Cole could treat both her leg deformity and length discrepancy with success.

After Lee Ann’s first evaluation by Dr. Cole, he recommended a series of surgeries that would ultimately give her a normal looking and functioning leg. Her initial surgery addressed the leg deformity and involved breaking the bone in multiple places to realign it with a device (Intramedullary Nail) inside the bone. Once these fractures healed, Lee Ann was a candidate for leg lengthening.

Dr. Cole used the Intramedullary Skeletal Kinetic Distractor (ISKD), a device he invented especially for bone lengthening. This device is the only one of its kind used internally to lengthen bone, providing little interference with a patient’s lifestyle. After several surgeries, Lee Ann’s leg is able to function and look like a normal healthy leg. This treatment will allow Lee Ann to walk normally and even wear high heels for the first time in her life.
