Minimally
invasive surgical procedures were developed to prevent some of the
common complications from traditional large surgical incisions. The
advantage of minimally invasive surgery is the ability to maintain
blood supply to the bone and soft tissues which helps the healing
process, reduces the risk of infection and complications resulting
from large wounds on the skin. This type of surgery is also associated
with less blood loss, a smaller scar and most importantly, a quicker
recovery allowing patients to return to normal activity sooner. Minimally
invasive orthopaedic procedures are used for diagnosing and treating
diseases and injuries to bones, cartilage, ligaments, muscles and
tendons.
Minimally
invasive surgery is not just doing the same surgical procedure through
smaller incisions. It involves a different approach to the problem,
requiring that the surgeon develop three-dimensional interpretation
as well as refined surgical skill.
This
type of surgery also requires different surgical instruments that
may not be available commercially. In Dr. Cole's case, he has developed
multiple instruments that facilitate his unique approach to various
problems. The multiple devices invented by Dr. Cole allow him to address
complex problems in a standardized fashion, which gives him the opportunity
to improve his technique.
While
minimally invasive surgery may seem like a new concept, Dr. Cole has
been performing it successfully for years. In fact, he contributed
to some of the groundbreaking developments in minimally invasive surgery.
Dr. Cole and the Fracture Care Center team is uniquely experienced
and understands minimally invasive practices and procedures.
