MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing

Reactivate Your Active Lifestyle

Over the past century, Florida Hospital has explored the most effective treatment methods for orthopaedic medical conditions. Today our surgeons utilize state-of-the-art techniques and technologies, like MAKOplasty robotic partial knee resurfacing, to treat osteoarthritis of the knee.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a form of arthritis and a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown and eventual loss of joint cartilage. Cartilage is a protein substance that serves as a cushion between the bones of a joint. With OA, the top layer of cartilage breaks down and wears away, allowing bones under the cartilage to rub together.

Symptoms of OA of the knee include:

  • Pain while standing or walking short distances, climbing up or down stairs, or getting in and out of chairs

  • Knee pain with activity

  • Start up pain or stiffness when activities are initiated from a sitting position

  • Stiffness in your knee joint after getting out of bed

  • Swelling in one or more areas of the knee

  • A grating sensation or crunching feeling when you use your knee

    Disease stages

Surgically Treating OA of the Knee

The most common surgical knee intervention performed for OA is a total knee replacement. During this procedure, the natural joint is removed and replaced with an artificial implant. This treatment option is usually offered to patients with advanced osteoarthritis in the three compartments of the knee. But, total knee replacement is not always optimal for patients with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis in just one or two compartments of the knee.

A Revolutionary Treatment for Osteoarthritis of the Knee

Renowned orthopaedic surgeons Dr. J. Dean Cole and Dr. Brian Vickaryous are bringing a revolutionary new treatment option to Orlando that will have patients walking the same day and back to daily activities within 1 week of surgery – introducing MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing.

The MAKOplasty® Partial Knee Resurfacing procedure is designed to relieve the pain caused by joint degeneration.

The MAKOplasty® Difference

Before the MAKOplasty® procedure became available, the precision required to successfully resurface the delicate tissues of the knee for implant placement was extremely difficult to achieve. What makes this procedure so much different is that it is powered by the surgeon-controlled RIO® Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopaedic System. Florida Hospital is the only health care provider in Orlando to offer this new technology, which is guided by our own hand-selected team of elite orthopaedic surgeons.

This highly advanced robot assisted platform helps create a three-dimensional pre-surgical plan for removing areas of diseased tissue within the knee joint. During surgery, the RIO® provides our surgeons with real-time visual, tactile and auditory feedback to facilitate optimal joint resurfacing and implant positioning. It is this exceptional accuracy and optimal implant placement that can provide you with a more natural feeling knee motion following surgery.

Due to its precision and minimally invasive surgical requirement, the MAKOplasty® offers a range of advantages over traditional knee resurfacing or replacement procedures, such as:

  • Improved surgical outcomes
  • Less implant wear and loosening providing a more “natural” feeling knee implant
  • Sparing of natural bone
  • Smaller incision
  • Less scarring
  • Rapid recovery and shorter hospital stay
  • Promotes quick relief from pain and return to daily activities

As a knee arthroplasty procedure, MAKOplasty® is typically covered by most Medicare-approved and private health insurers.
