Rising Number Of Complex Ortho Injuries Prompts Florida Hospital To Open New Fracture Care Center

April 1, 2004 - Orlando, FL - Florida Hospital is bringing on one of Central Florida’s best-known orthopaedic surgeons, Dr. J. Dean Cole, to serve as Medical Director of the hospital’s new Fracture Care Center. Cole will be the system’s first hospital-based orthopaedic surgeon who will be available to perform complex orthopaedic injury surgery seven days a week.

“Florida Hospital’s Orthopaedic Institute has seen a continual increase in the number of elective surgery cases, such as joint replacement surgery,” said Lee Johnson, Administrator for the Orthopaedic Institute. “Our physicians’ surgical schedules are filled with elective surgeries making it difficult for them to meet the growing orthopaedic needs of the Central Florida community. Dr. J. Dean Cole has a vision to establish a center which provides high quality orthopaedic services, by providing emergency surgical support 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

“I saw this as a unique opportunity for an orthopaedic trauma surgeon to work together with a prestigious facility to provide orthopaedic trauma care to our region,” said Dr. J. Dean Cole. “The comprehensive team approach to orthopaedic trauma patients from arrival to end of treatment distinguishes Florida Hospital’s new Fracture Care Center apart from all other facilities. Rarely does orthopaedic surgery need to occur within 24 hours of an orthopaedic injury. We want the community to know that they have a choice in where they are treated for their injury. Our Fracture Care Center is staffed with a dedicated team of professionals experienced and trained in complex orthopaedic care and surgery. We are equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment specific for minimally invasive skeletal fixation. Together, these elements support our focus on giving the highest quality care to obtain a good outcome despite a bad injury.”

The Fracture Care Center will be a part of the Florida Hospital Orthopaedic Institute, but will solely focus on treating emergency complex orthopedic cases, such as a compound fracture of the femur or a fractured pelvis. The facility will be located at the Orlando campus because it serves at the system’s main tertiary care center.

Currently serving as President of the Florida Orthopaedic Society, Dr. Cole received his degrees from Rollins College and the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He completed his fellowship in OrthopaedicTramatology at the University of Texas Medical School. In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Cole has a number of patents for orthopaedic devices now sold worldwide.
